Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

Where Misty Mountains Meet Majestic Gorillas

Nestled in the far northwest of Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park is one of Africa’s most iconic and biodiverse protected areas. Covering over 160 square kilometers, the park is home to a chain of ancient volcanoes—some still active—that form the majestic Virunga Mountain range, shared by Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

But what truly sets Volcanoes National Park apart is its most famous residents: the endangered mountain gorillas. Trekking through the lush bamboo forests to observe these gentle giants in their natural habitat is a once-in-a-lifetime experience—intimate, humbling, and unforgettable.

Lake Kivu

A Serene Escape on Rwanda’s Western Frontier

Stretching along Rwanda’s western border with the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lake Kivu is one of Africa’s Great Lakes and a breathtaking natural wonder. Surrounded by lush hills, quiet fishing villages, and scenic towns like Gisenyi, Kibuye, and Cyangugu, Lake Kivu offers a peaceful retreat and a refreshing contrast to Rwanda’s inland forests and savannahs.

The lake’s crystal-clear waters are perfect for boat rides, kayaking, and swimming—thanks to its rare combination of beauty and safety, as it’s free of dangerous wildlife like crocodiles and hippos. Along its shores, visitors can enjoy stunning sunsets, sample fresh lake fish, and interact with friendly local communities.

A Primate Paradise in the Heart of Africa

Located in Rwanda’s southwestern highlands, Nyungwe National Park is one of Africa’s oldest and most biologically rich rainforests. Spanning over 1,000 square kilometers, this lush, mist-covered jungle is a sanctuary for rare wildlife, breathtaking scenery, and unforgettable adventure.

Nyungwe is best known for its primates—hosting 13 species, including large troops of colobus monkeys and over 500 chimpanzees, making it one of the top destinations for chimpanzee trekking in East Africa. But there’s so much more to discover here.

The Canopy Walkway, suspended 50 meters above the forest floor, offers a thrilling bird’s-eye view of this pristine wilderness—one of the only treetop experiences of its kind in Africa.
